With sufficient caveats this product is an excellent bargain. You just have to know what you're getting.
First of all, this collection is in no way "complete". It contains the Marvel Spotlight lead-in comics to the 1973 Ghost Rider vol. 1 series, all of vol. 1, the complete vol. 2 series (and two annuals), the complete vol. 3 series (wow, that one really never made a blip on my radar ~ and it looks like for good reason), the Garth Ennis 6-issue mini-series retconning the whole kit and kaboodle, and then an introductory smattering of the vol. 4 2006 issues. There are no crossovers, no special appearances, no team-ups, etc. So if that matters (and for vol. 2 especially I think it does), then you are out of luck.
The packaging is cheap and crummy and riddled with errors. Oh well, it's just a box, right?
The files are plain ol' .pdfs (to my mind a boon). No complicated software necessary to read them. Make sure you update your Acrobat Reader to the latest to ensure you won't have watermarks on your pages. They are scanned as double-page spreads, which is kinda annoying, but not prohibitive in terms of reading.
The digitized copies are not created from archival quality issues. They took a set of books and scanned them, flaws and all. There is nothing enhanced or smoothed over and you can even see the staples on 'em. Some reviews complained about this, but I think it's perfectly charming and I'm okay with it.
If you're into the original Ghost Rider, you know that assembling this collection would be a harrowing prospect and probably cost hundreds of dollars (if you can even find all the issues these days). I used to have a tally as to what I'd paid for my own collection, but I don't recall the number anymore ~ and that was 20 years ago when I bought my issue no. 1 for $8.00 (and thought it was crazy expensive). For less than $30 you get the whole series. It's cheaper than buying the Essential Ghost Rider (and it's in color).
For me, likewise, this is especially lovely with regards to this blog because even though I am reading my physical copies right now, it will be nice to put them away again when I am done and still be able to go back and reference them without having to keep handling them. Likewise, I experimented last week with trying to take digital photos to share some of the interior art ~ and though I was successful, it was kind of a pain in the rump. Now I can share all the screen caps in the world without worrying about crushing my comics on a scan bed or fussing with propping them for pictures. Yay!
Finally, this complete collection is a discontinued product and the possibility of Marvel repackaging it is slim to none (they have terminated their relationship with GIT, the producers over quality-related and other issues). So if you have any desire to own this, you better get your own copy before they are all gone. And if you're serious about having the original collection, I'd spend the $28.99 rather than shoot for a used copy. Given that the product is potentially flawed, better to take your chances with one that's never been opened than one that a former buyer might be attempting to unload because of problems.
